IRON AGAINST RUNNER

Here is the culprit!  It is only about 2 years old.  It started leaking several months ago, so I empty the water out of it when I turn it off.  It started spitting so I cleaned it with vinegar.  I have always used distilled water in it, but recently was told to use drinking water in it.      I guess I did something wrong because its final crime was to spit brown water spots all over a runner that I had been quilting and was only 3/4 of the way complete.
There was nothing to do but wash the runner, still 1/4 of the way unquilted.  I treated it with stain spray, Oxi Stain liquid, and Blue Dawn.  I did manage to get the stains out.  I tossed it into the washer on delicate and hung it to dry.  The stains came out.
I pulled out an old iron, no steam this time, just Best Press and was able to iron it nice and flat and it actually ended up looking like it had never been wash.  I was able to finish quilting my circles on it.

I have just purchased a new Rowenta Pro Master.  I am reading the directions really carefully.  Believe me the directions are lengthy and specific, since the silly thing ended up costing $80 and that was with a 20% off coupon I am going to follow these maintenance directions perfectly.  Lesson learned.
It is all finished now, no brown spots and not looking the worse for the whole experience.

  1. Good info! This sort of thing happens to all of us! Very nice table runner, uniquely designed.

  2. I really like the runner. Don't you just hate spitting irons? I have one that uses distilled water, one that uses drinking water, one I am afraid to use water at all, so Best Press is used. I have written in marker on the filler container pitcher, which iron and what kind of water to use. So far so good, since I started being extra careful.

  3. Hi DonnaleeQ,
Naughty iron! I just had to exchange my iron - it would decide to turn itself ON even in the off position. That was too darn scary. Love the circles and the runner - good ideas on getting those spots out. ~smile~ Roseanne

  4. I have gone through several irons, including 2 Rowenta so now I have a Shark, less expensive

  5. My old iron was doing that, too, so I ended up getting a new one. I decided not to ever put water in it, just use Best Press or a spray bottle of water. So far, that's working for me. Your runner is really pretty, and I'm so glad you were able to get the stain out!

  6. I never use water in my irons any more. In my experience, they ALWAYS spit brown water eventually. Now I use the most basic (and cheapest!) Black and Decker iron I could find. So glad you were able to get the spots out.

  7. $80 for an iron?! I opted for a retro waterless iron ($3 thrifted). I love it!

  8. I am really hard on irons. I follow all the directions and they all eventually have issues. Apparently you are supposed to empty the water out after every use and that is so not fun to me! A few months ago I bought an expensive Reliable iron. I loved it! That is until it started smoking and flashing a bunch of codes at me! It has been sent in to Reliable, but I don't know what they are going to do yet. I went through two Rowentas, my best luck has been an inexpensive Black and Decker!
